DEPARTURE: Sørvágur harbour TIME: 10:30 a.m. DAY: Sundays and wednesdays DURATION: 7 1/2 hours MIN./MAX.: 4/25 COST: 280 DKK AVAILABILITY: 15 May - 31 August. The most westerly of the Faroe Islands, Mykines is renowned as the paradise of seabirds. The island is not easy to reach, however, as transportation, both by sea and air, largely depends on weather conditions. You leave Sørvágur on the little ferry Súlan at 10:30 a.m. and set sail for Mykines. Upon arrival, you will have an hour to explore independently and wander through the village with its grass-roofed houses blackened with tar and the old stone church dating from 1878. This picturesque village has inspired many, including the famous Faroese painter S.J. Mikines. At 1 p.m. you leave the guesthouse, Kristianshús, to start the walk. After ca. 20 min. of uphill walking in beautiful surroundings you reach the first stop on the trip, an area known as Rógvin, which offers offers a beautiful view in all directions. The walk then continues towards the footbrigde that spans the 35-m deep gorge separating Mykines Hólm from the main island. During the journey, the guide will tell you about the island´s rich bird life, about the puffins and about the only gannet colony found in the Faroe Islands. The homeward journey takes you along the edge, from where you can often see seals relaxing along the rocky shore. GOOD TO KNOW: Those with severe vertigo might wish to explore other areas of Mykines that are less precipitous. Lunch and transport to and from your accommodation on Vágar to the ferry is 120 DKK. One may also take the helicopter to Mykines on Wednesdays and Sunday return by ferry. Helicopter reservations should be made well in advance, Tel 00298-333455.
