DEPARTURE: Hotel Vágar TIME: 10 a.m. DAY: Tuesdays and Saturdays DURATION: 6 hours MIN./MAX.: 4/20 COST: 250 DKK AVAILABILITY: Year - round.

With no road connections, the village of Gásadalur is in a unique situation, and there is still time to experience this isolated idyllic village. The construction of a tunnel soon will change Gásadalur forever. The excursion departs from Hotel Vágar at 10 a.m. You are driven out to Skarsá, a few minutes drive from the village of Bøur. You follow the old mountain path, which is still used to carry post to the village three times a week. The path is very steep and heavy going in the early stages, so we allow plenty of time to rest. You walk past Líksteinin - the corpse stone, where in bygone days the coffin would be placed, while the bearers rested on their way over the mountain to the graveyard in Bøur. You can rest at Keldan vívd (a spring) and enjoy a beautiful view of the islets of Tindhólmur an Drangarnir and the island of Mykines beyond. According to legend, those who drink from the spring are granted eternal youth. The tour then continues to the mountain pass known as skarð, where you have a lovely view of the solitary village of Gásadalur in the valley below. The descent down to the village is steep and dramatic - good footwear and perhaps a walking stick are recommended. You need to take the same route back at present, but when the tunnel is completed you will be able to drive back to the neighbouring village of Bøur.

GOOD TO KNOW: A packed lunch can be ordered from the Tourist Association Vágar - Mykines.
