Welcome to Vágar and Mykines.

Vágar and Mykines are the most westerly of the Faroe Islands. The international airport is situated on Vágar between the villages of Sřrvágur and Miđvágur. The island also has the largest inland lakesin the Faroe Islands, Leitisvatn, and Fjallavatn. The lakes offer good opportunities for trout fishing - particularly in the evenings. Since 2002, Vágar has been connected to the principal Faroe Islands via a sub-sea tunnel. The tunnel makes it easier for visitors to enjoy all that Vágar has to offer. Well of the beaten track is the village of Gásadalur. Isolated by soaring mountains, this is the only village still without any road links to the world beyond. Mail is carried over the mountain along ancient paths three times a week. Soon this isolation will come to an end, however, once work on a new tunnel is completed in 2005. The village is serviced by helicopter throughout the year. Sights on Vágar of historical interest include a rune stone in the church at Sandavágur and the Kálvalíđ museum in Miđvágur. Kálvalíđ is where the infamous Beinta lived. She was the priest´s widow who was the inspiration for Jřrgen-Frantz Jacobsen´s novel Barbara. The novel was made into a film in 1997. The island of Mykines, which is a renowned paradise for seabirds, is but a one-hour boat trip from the village of Sřrvágur. The puffins are especially beguiling, as their curious eyes follow you from the moment you step ashore at the small natural harbour. The only gannet colony in the Faroe Islands is found on the sea stacks just off the coast of Mykines.

Memorable experiences of fascinating nature and of Faroese hospitality await you on Vágar and Mykines.
